Summary

A Read with Jenna Bonus Selection

Ethan Joella’s deeply moving, life-affirming novel about residents in a small Connecticut town facing everyday fears and desires—a lost love, a stalled career, a diagnosis—pulls at the heartstrings and provides hope

In the small city of Wharton, Connecticut, lives are beginning to unravel。 A husband betrays his wife。 A son struggles with addiction。 A widow misses her late spouse。 At the heart of these interlinking stories is one couple: Freddie and Greg Tyler。

Greg has just been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a brutal form of cancer。 He intends to handle this the way he has faced everything else: through grit and determination。 But can Greg successfully overcome his illness? How will Freddie and their daughter cope if he doesn’t? How do the other residents of Wharton learn to live with loss, and find happiness again?

An emotionally powerful debut that immerses the reader into a community of friends, family, and neighbors, A Little Hope celebrates the importance of small moments of connection and the ways that love and forgiveness can help us survive even the most difficult of life’s challenges。

Beautiful。 Poignant。 Moves quickly。 Many sentences make you stop and reread。

I love this book so much: the intertwined stories of friends and strangers, the happiness and sadness。 The ending。 Ethan Joella wrote every story in a way that made you relate to it, envision it, feel it。 Every story had its connection to the prior one, yet was still completely surprising。 I cannot wait to see more from this author。

This book is the literary version of a drone flyover。 It gives you glimpses of the mundane and sad lives of many people。 But you always feel like you’re hovering above, not quite in control of what you are seeing。 As soon as something seems interesting, it flies on to the next scene。

This book is a perfect example of why I love the Book of the Month Club。 I'm not sure if it would have even crossed my radar had it not been one of their November picks - and to be honest it sounded maybe a bit too sad for my taste and I wasn't totally sold on choosing it。。。but I am so glad I did。 This is currently my favorite book of the year (and I've read 84 so far - many excellent reads) and with only a month and a half left in 2021, it will probably retain that spot。 Was it sad? In some parts, yes, absolutely。 But it was not a SAD book overall。 As the title suggests, there is so much hope right along with any sadness。I would describe it as a quiet story, covering about 10 months in a small Connecticut town, and from the viewpoints of several of the people who live there。 It starts out with Freddie, who lives a very happy life, but is waiting to hear if her husband Greg's cancer is as bad as they fear。 The next chapter switches to Greg's perspective a couple weeks later, and you learn that yes, his cancer is very aggressive and he is in for the fight of his life。 The next chapter moves on to Greg's boss, and gives some background on his life, and so on。 It covers several characters, and I have to tip my hat to the author because each one is so well fleshed out that they felt real, and I loved all of them。 Flaws and all。 Their backstories were compelling (often sad), and helped explain why they are the way they are now。 I was completely engrossed and hated to put it down。 It was a school/work night for me, but I still stayed up reading till midnight because I just had to finish it。 And at the same time, I didn't want it to end。I loved it - 5 fully earned stars for this debut novel。 I can't wait to read what Ethan Joella writes next。 。。。more

Fairly boring。 When will I stop trying to convince myself that these of “slice of life” books are for me?

Lyrical, emotional and beautifully written, A Little Hope reads like poetry。 It’s a simple story, set in a small town, where ordinary people’s lives intersect in ways that will change them forever。 While the story is not Greg Tyler’s, his cancer diagnosis is the catalyst that drives the story。 Through Greg, we meet his wife Freddie, Mrs。 Crowly and her son Luke, Ahmed, Alex, Isis and others。 Each character stars in their own drama and we see the conflict between the self that they show to others Lyrical, emotional and beautifully written, A Little Hope reads like poetry。 It’s a simple story, set in a small town, where ordinary people’s lives intersect in ways that will change them forever。 While the story is not Greg Tyler’s, his cancer diagnosis is the catalyst that drives the story。 Through Greg, we meet his wife Freddie, Mrs。 Crowly and her son Luke, Ahmed, Alex, Isis and others。 Each character stars in their own drama and we see the conflict between the self that they show to others and their more tangled inner thoughts。 Through a year’s immersion in Wharton, Connecticut, we feel the love, death, grief, anger, sadness and joy in their daily lives。A Little Hope is a gift to the reader。 It belongs on a shelf in your house, to be read and reread。 It will stay with you long after you have finished the final page。 Ethan Joella is an incredibly talented, gifted author。 5 stars。Thank you to NetGalley, Scribner and Ethan Joella for this ARC。 。。。more

4。5 stars。 A touching story of intersecting characters in a small Connecticut town。 They are all dealing with different struggles and this book showed their struggles and their connections to each other in such a sweet, moving way。 The last chapter was a satisfying ending… not all the characters get a happy ending, as that’s how life is, but it brought a nice closure to these characters I really grew to care about。 Definitely recommend。

Future Alexa- I have a lot of thoughts1。 SO many characters for the size of book it was2。 I think it could make me sad if I was already a little sad?3。 So many bad things happened without being actually developed as plot devices? Like it was just unnecessarily a bummer without actually being sad?Meh。

A very thoughtful and emotional provoking read, they author brings every day struggles from ppl around us。 The only reason I didn’t give a 5 star review since I felt the sadness compiling without relief of enough hope。I received this book as a Goodreads giveaway

A very captivating & quick read! Highly recommend!

“Freddie has always loved mornings。 She likes the margins she gains when she’s the first awake。”This book is extremely sad, yet also realistic and relatable。 At one point towards the middle I remember thinking, “there’s no way anything else unhappy can possibly happen to these people。” Despite the sadness, it also does manage to deliver A Little Hope, as promised in the title。

If it weren’t for book club, I probably would’ve DNF’d this book。 There was too many characters and it didn’t flow very well。

This was the perfect fall read! I like that it was based in Connecticut because that’s where I’m from。 It was very “small town” but also very realistic to problems people and families experience in every day life。 As the reader follows the different characters through their stories, they will resonate with the very real experiences of finding out a loved one has cancer, grappling with infidelity, reconciling with loss, and trying to open oneself up to new beginnings。 From the book jacket: “A Lit This was the perfect fall read! 20 pages in, I was sobbing。 If you’re going through a loss, this book will have you crying so much。 This was such a good read going through all these different lives and their life changes, but be ready to cry。

Something about this book, just didn't do it for me。 I have been reading a lot of really good books recently and this one just felt lackluster。 It didn't grab me and keep me engaged。 Not saying it wasn't a good book and the characters stories weren't interesting, I just think they are underdeveloped。 Something about this book, just didn't do it for me。 I have been reading a lot of really good books recently and this one just felt lackluster。 It didn't grab me and keep me engaged。 Not saying it wasn't a good book and the characters stories weren't interesting, I just think they are underdeveloped。 。。。more

I'm always interested to read about how characters deal with tragedy in their lives and how they manage to go on。 It really makes me appreciate my own life and to reevaluate constantly the things that are really important。 I'm always interested to read about how characters deal with tragedy in their lives and how they manage to go on。 It really makes me appreciate my own life and to reevaluate constantly the things that are really important。 。。。more

⭐️⭐️⭐️- a good book for the Thanksgiving spirit。 This book was vignettes of people dealing with grief and loss and how to cope and overcome these feelings。 I enjoyed this book, I thought it was good。 I appreciate it for what it is, but in my book, I wanted a bit more from this story。 I wish it were longer and explored things in greater depth, I felt a lot of it was glossed over。 I think the fact that I read it in November made a difference for me。

I’m definitely in the minority with my 2 star rating but this story fell flat for me and I could not connect with any of the characters。 DNF at 55%。 None of it was making any sense。 Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this early release in exchange for my review。

Beautifully written novel - more a collection of short vignettes - about the lives of people within a small Connecticut town。 Their intertwining stories of love, family, relationships, loss, regret, and hope make this a worthwhile read。 4。5 stars

A very nice and easy to read book。 I always love books with lots of different characters and the different ways their lives intertwine, but I felt like this had just a few too many--ended up being a bit too surface level, and I would have loved for it to get a little bit deeper with some of them。 That said--an enjoyable afternoon read!

Surita

Sad story with multiple characters going through their own painful times in their lives 。 Overall was Well written

Hannah

I really liked reading so many interweaving characters perspectives。 It reminded me of winesburg, Ohio。 I just felt like it was a lot of one type of character。
